FundingUniverse invites you to join them for the first annual Utah Angel Investor of the Year Award Luncheon on June 23, 2009 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Downtown Salt Lake Hilton Hotel. All business professionals are invited to come and recognize those prestigious angel investors who are making a difference in Utah’s community by spurring entrepreneurism.  This event also provides a great opportunity to network with some of Utah’s top investors.

Brock Blake, CEO of FundingUniverse, understands the importance of angel investors in the economy.  “Utah has historically been a Mecca for entrepreneurs and start-up businesses. For the past four years FundingUniverse has provided a platform to help connect investors and entrepreneurs and, as a result, helped many companies receive angel financing to start and grow their business,” Blake said. “Through FundingUniverse’s relationship with the investment community, we understand the unprecedented importance that angel investors have in the economic growth of the local community and are excited to recognize these investors in a meaningful way.”

Event Details include:

  • Wednesday, June 23, 2009
  • 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Hilton Alpine Ballroom
  • 255 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City, UT

For anyone who really wants to see entrepreneurialism at work, and ways that folks in Utah are helping to facilitate it, there are a couple of upcoming events that are not to be missed:

Launchup #2 presents “Today’s Mama” and “Amber Alerts GPS”

A couple of really exciting companies will be showcased at this, the second Launchup event.  I had the pleasure of getting a chance to meet with both of this companies last week, and I think we will all find ourselves intrigued and impressed.  Also, there are some reat opportunities for both of these companies, and great opportunities for us to all get involved and help.

After all, that’s what Launchup is really all about.  Come to see what cool stuff is going on in Utah, but also come to learn and to contribute.  This is a team effort, not just a sales pitch.

Event details:

Date: Wednesday May 27th

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Location: Utah Association of Counties Building – 5397 S. Vine Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84017 (or online)

RSVP: If attending in person, PLEASE RSVP. If on Twitter, tweet: I’m going to #LaunchUp, are you? If not on Twitter, email jeremy @ jeremyhanks . com and let me know you’re coming.

Event URL: http://doba.acrobat.com/launchup2/

The second event to take note of is the Funding Universe Livepitch Event.  I have to say, that as big a fan as I am of the speed pitch events that Brock and Funding Universe put on, I am an even bigger fan of the Live Pitch events.  This allows you a chance to see other entrepreneurs pitch their ideas.  But it also gives you a chance to see how investors react.  Want to know what an investors thinks?  Want to see what you need to be prepared for?  Want to see cool ideas being pitched by local teams?

If so, don’t miss this:

When: Tuesday, June 9th 11:00 – 1:00

Where: Omniture Headquarters

Okay, so I gotta tell ya, when I walked in to the offices of Control4 and they started showing Control4 Logo me what exactly they were up to, I think I lost a bit of my objectivity as my credit card instantly leapt into my hand.  This stuff is neat.  Unfortunately, they are also pretty darned hard to schedule time with.  As such, we had to do some last minute shifting and we will be presenting Ryan Money and Mark Newman from HireVue (who also have extremely neat stuff) in June instead.

So please join us on Friday, May 18th at the Bohemain (one building east of State Street on 7200 south in Salt Lake City) from 3:00-4:00 to listen to Eric Smith from Control4.  We have the whole upstairs reserved, and drinks are on us.  Bring your friends and co workers.  This is a do not miss presentation… I promise it will blow your socks off (as such, Utah Tech Spotlight takes to responsibility due to flip-flops and/or sandals.)

Date: Friday, May 18th
Time: 3:00 – 4:00
Location: Bohemian Brewery And Grill
(94 East and 7200 South, right off of State Street, SLC)

Well Utah, as you may have already heard, Seth Godin is definitely on his way to Utah. GodinMobile He’ll be here May 24th, so mark it on your calendar.  You can see more specific information at Wordmob.  I know there has been a lot of buzz about this on the web, but you might have also started seeing it around town today.  As an example, Ash took one for the team, and turned his minivan into the Godin-mobile.  To heck with purple cows… I want to see the next book about little white minivans (there’s a song in there somewhere, I just know it…)

Congratulations to Wordmob, and to Utah.  If you haven’t bought your tickets yet, I would do so.

Good job to Josh Coates and his crew!  Thanks go out to Phil Burns for keeping us all abreast of this exciting news.

Seth Godin comes to Utah

Seth Godin, acclaimed auther, blogger, and basic Marketing God is on his way to Utah.  This is a huge opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about marketing from one of the most outspoken, and looked to voices on the subject.  So who is Seth, and why do you want to hear from him?  Well, if you are into marketing, you probably already know.  If not, google will give you just over 2 million gems to choose from on the topic.  Alternatively, a good summary I found can be accessed here.

So why is Seth Coming to Utah, well obviously he must have heard that the Red Iguana is the best dang Mexican food that can be found.  Or, more truthfully, we have a real local mover and shaker, Phil Burns to thank for this.  Please click over to Phil’s blog and see how you can participate in the event.   This is a real opportunity, and I thank Phil, and those who are making Herculean efforts to make sure that Utah gets this kind of exposure, and opportunities like this and so many of the other exciting upcoming events they have in the hopper.
